do i have to major in music business to work for a record label?

November 292009

i live in california and i want to go to either uc santa cruz or san diego but i want to work for a record label. i know some colleges have music business majors but not the ones i want to go to. can i just major in business administration and get a job at a label?

It’s way more beneficial to go to a school with a Music Business or Entertainment Business major but I have some friends who have gotten jobs at record labels without having those degrees.

The trick is to major in a business or marketing class and apply for an internship at a record label. Once you get the internship they’ll teach you all you need to know about the business and if they like you they’ll hire you. Once you get hired you work your way up the food chain, make connections, and network.

In this kind of business it’s all about who you know. Start with the internship and make friends.

Hope that helps!

What are the differences between music label company, music publisher and distributor?

November 292009

Please help me to understand that what exactly a music label company does for a musician and also same thing about music publishers. In the other word what are the services that these two business offer to musicians or suppose to offer.
Thank you.

A music label may provide different things for an artist, it all depends on the label and it’s size/finances. In general, labels book tours for artists (or at least provide a booking agent/company that will do it), provide transportation for touring, and fund the recording and pressing of the record. They will also have distribution deals in place with distributors so that the finished products gets out and in people’s hands. Labels are also responsible for promotional material and advertising (this may include getting artists on the radio).
A distributor does exactly what it’s name says it does: Distributes music. They control where the record is available; what stores it is in.
I’m not sure exactly what you mean by a music publisher, but as far as my understanding goes, publishers mainly deal with copyright issues and rights to the music.

finaly free music!?

November 292009

QTRAX.com looks like a place to download free music finaly! they are starting 1/27/08 with 5 million songs! they are backed by some major labels like EMI, SonyBMG, Universal Music and Warner Music. how cool is this…free is the best price…
yes, its legal..lol!

This is not going to suit everyone:

* It’s mandatory to download the Qtrax Player. Since the player is where the service displays the ads, you must use it, no getting around it.

* Qtrax songs will be wrapped in DRM (Digital Rights Management)

* Some music is still not cleared by labels for digital distribution

* PC Only

* QTrax songs can’t be played on iPods. They say this may change at a later date, but until then, this will kill the service’s potential in a big way.

Did Linkin Park Sign With Reprise Records?

November 292009

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I was just wondering if Linkin Park changed from being signed with Warner Bros. Records to Reprise Records. I know they’re both under the same label (Warner Music Group), but every time I see the "New Divide" music video, it shows them as being signed under Reprise Records. Does anyone have a logical reason for this?

They’re still with WB

November 292009

What was the purpose of major record labels creating and promoting teen idols in the popular music of the 50s and early 60s?
A. to make inoffensive versions of Tin Pan Alley songs.
B. to integrate Caucasian, African-American and Latino singers into rock ‘n’ roll.
C. all these answers are correct.
D. to counteract the success of independent labels.
E. to make rock music more accessible to youth.

and why??

E.

To generate record sales, but more importantly to sell other products like movies, lunch boxes, collecting card, posters, sorta like th same thing as now.

what are some major music labels?

November 292009

im a singer with some of her own songs but i really need to get my music out there i would like to get with a label but i have no idea what to do now.

also im not some girl that wants to be famous. i have been voice training for about 4 years and this is my passion and what i love to do.

any advice?
im a country singer but i also do pop. i have had 4 years of traning and this is what i want to do with my life.

i do have an agent but its for modeling and acting. im with Wilhelmina. also im only14 years old. i dont think that makes me ignorant. i had a question im new to the whole shabang and needed some help. i know some but i just thought i would ask and see all the different ones i could get.

You probably want independent labels if you are promoting yourself. If you want to deal with major labels, you should get an agent, especially if you are so ignorant that you don’t even know the names of major labels.

Try American Idol too.

Does anyone know of any independent country music record label’s ?

November 292009

My friends and I are inspiring country music singer’s/song writers and we are attempting to get our songs out there. What we are wondering is if ANYONE out thre knows of any independent record lable’s that would accept unsolicited matierial? or do you have any advice?

I’m a huge fan of a site called Digital Rodeo. There are a bunch of independent labels on there that look at independent artists…they also feature some really good indie bands…
