My dream is to work in the music industry, maybe for a record label or to be a band manager/tour manager but I honestly don’t know how to get started. My major is public relations and I’m just about to finish my second year of college. I just need some advice on getting in the industry. Like what are some good places to look for internships? What are some things I need to do other than school? I just need help!
Oh and by the way, I’m not looking to work with huge musicians or record labels. I’m more into small record labels and musicians that aren’t as big as britney spears or anything.

Ok, my friends have a rock band. They just got signed by Warner 4 days ago, and know they are in the process of making arrangements for promoting, and stuff. They are getting all this free stuff too lol…
Here’s the thing: they are a rock band, and I am a rapper. So my question is this:

Does them getting signed, in any way, help me with MY quest to become a rapper? Like, I went up to them and congratulated them, and one of my friends said "I promise man, once we get big, I’m going to make you famous too." So my question is:

If I make a demo, will he be able to give it to his record label (warner signs rappers as well) and say "check this rapper out", or will I have to follow the steps like everyone else and send a press kit, wait,etc.? (Or will my friend who got signed be allow to just give it to Warner with his own hands?)

If your lucky it will all be easy for you just work hard and try your best in everything and when it comes to your demo make sure it sounds good but you can’t rely on your friends to get you big. Try giving the demo and also talk to your friends about if they were actually serious and if that doesn’t work out have a backup plan ready.

I want to get signed to a record label, but i don’t know how to present my music to them. It’s so hard to get together a band, so I am trying a solo career.

I make pop/rock music and I am 19 years old.

Any suggestions?

It’s basically set up as a resource for artists who don’t really have any knowledge of the music biz yet. I’d take a look at their wiki first, because it walks you through the different parts of the process step by step, then I would try the other articles.

But yea, I’d read up a lot before even thinking about getting signed to a label. Not to say that and make you think, you know, "Oh man this is too intimidating." It just takes a little research first.

I am trying to start getting into the studio, but I want to work with some music producers that will get me somewhere. My sound is like Jojo, Rihanna…that type of music.
And after I do that, I’d like to get in touch with a record label, A&R’s…anyone have any advice?

Miasmah is a cool little electronic label that does most of it’s mp3’s for free. I think they have a few CDs for general sale nowadays, but most of their output is still free to download at
