boondocks ………Little Big Town

March 112010

Little Big Town is an American country music vocal group. Founded in 1998, the group has comprised the same four members since its inception: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet. The quartet’s musical style relies heavily on four-part vocal harmonies, with all four members alternating as lead singers. Westbrook and Sweet also play rhythm guitar.
After a recording deal with the Mercury Nashville Records label which produced no singles or albums, Little Big Town released their self-titled debut on Monument Records in 2002. It produced two minor country chart singles before the group left the label. By 2005, the group had been signed to Equity Music Group, an independent record label owned by Clint Black. Their second album, The Road to Here, was released that year. Certified platinum in the U.S., it produced consecutive Top Ten singles on the country charts in “Boondocks” and “Bring It On Home”. A Place to Land is the title of their third album, released in 2007. This album’s first single, “I’m with the Band”, was a Top 40 hit on the country charts. Shortly after its release, the group was transferred to Capitol Records Nashville, which acquired the rights to A Place to Land and released “Fine Line” and “Good Lord Willing” as its second and third singles, respectively. The latter song is new to the re-release.
Little Big Town have charted eleven songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. This figure includes a Christmas single which was made available only as a download, and a live cover of “Life in a Northern Town” (along with Sugarland and Jake Owen) which charted in 2008 based on unsolicited airplay.

Indie music : underrated?

March 82010

I personally think that indie music is the most underrated genre of rock there is. It happens to be my favorite. Do you think its underrated? And why or why not? Do you think being on an independent label has something to do with that?

Side question: Do you think a band has to be on an indie label to be considered indie music?
I agree with you Dark AK Alsvartsagor
I don’t like when mainstream bands use the term indie. And I think indie music has a specific sound. Pretty much a sound thats not commercialized, which is why many people dont know about those underground bands…which comes to my point about it being underrated.
Good point, Jay. So I guess I’m just not around a lot of people who appreciate it.

Indie has been adopted as a genre term – like it or not. Its definition is fluid, making it an easy umbrella term. I try not to, but I can’t help but find myself using it at times, but usually in combination with say, alternative, or experimental rock. Although, no one can nail the genre down – so it falls apart on any kind of further investigation. Its a bad habit I should really break, but I’m lazy.

But to answer the question at hand – I don’t know if its underrated, but I think that it might be underappreciated. If only because, if it falls under the definition of being on an independent label, less people are aware of these bands, so they really can’t appreciate them.

Perfume – Dream Fighter from BUDOUKaaaaaaaaaaN !!!!!

March 82010

Perfume is a female J-pop and electropop group from Hiroshima, consisting of Ayano O-moto, Yuka Kashino and Ayaka Nishiwaki, who debuted locally in 2001 (Tokyo in 2003) and nationally in 2005, releasing nine major singles from 2005-2009.

Since 2003, Perfume have been produced by Yasutaka Nakata, founder of the group capsule and the contemode label. Although their music produced by Nakata was like post-shibuya-kei when they belonged to an independent record label, their music was changed when they became major, covering electro house.

Buzzcocks – 02. Time’s Up (First take guitar dub)

March 52010

Spiral Scratch was a four-track EP by the punk band Buzzcocks, recorded in 1976 and released in January 1977. It was the first punk record to be self-released (that is, without the support of a record label), and only the third ever by a British punk band. When reissued in 1979, it reached number 31 in the UK Singles Chart.

Buzzcocks recorded the tracks on 28 December 1976 at Indigo Sound, Manchester on 16-track tape. According to Devoto, “It took three hours [to record the tracks], with another two for mixing.”[1] Produced by Martin Hannett (credited as Martin Zero), the music was roughly recorded, insistently repetitive, and energetic.

The band, having no record label support, had to borrow £500 from their friends and families to pay for the record’s production and manufacture.[2] The EP was released 29 January 1977 on the band’s own New Hormones label, making Buzzcocks the first English Punk group to establish an independent record label. Despite this, the disc quickly sold out its initial run of 1,000 copies, and went on to sell 16,000 copies, initially by mail order, but also with the help of the Manchester branch of music chain store Virgin, whose manager took some copies and persuaded other regional branch managers to follow suit.

what does it mean to be signed to a record label?

March 42010

What does being signed to a label entail? are recording hours payed for by the label? do they pay for production and distribution? does it change with every band and their contract?

I guess my basic question is: what advantages does being signed have over being an independent musician/band who distributes and produces the music completely on their own?

If you sign to a label they don’t really pay for anything. Some labels will give you a lump sum (called an advance) that you use to fund the recording of the album (including the recording hours), its production and distribution. They then get the money back off you by keeping your royalties until its paid off. They make profit on every CD sold while you make back a smaller percentage. The advance is basically a loan.

No record labels are prepared to pay out now either. They prefer to look for people who produce their own music, then they agree to distribute it so long as they can keep the money. Each deal is different but the label always looks after itself, not the artist. People on larger labels like Leona Lewis get the album paid for automatically but they make no money, no royalties, nothing at all from it. Totally slave labour.

If you do everything independently you own everything and you keep everything. Distribution is easy with companies like CD Baby around and having your own website to deal from. Although you’ll need some money to make your CD, at least you’re not selling your children to pay back a label. Until someone’s prepared to give you a deal where you won’t lose the rights to all your music then stay away from it. Lots of bands are doing fine without label involvement now ;)

How do I know I’m getting a good music distribution deal?

March 22010

I own a independent record label and I am about to talk to some distributors about a deal. I’m wondering what is a good distribution deal? What should I ask for and what shouldn’t I.

I’m a label owner too, and I negotiated a distribution deal for one of my CD’s: http://www.CharlieDoesSurf.com

I think anyone who pays you to make and distribute your discs is offering you a good deal. The question is, how much, and what kind of deal are you getting into?
The answers I looked at were:
How much are they offering you?
How many discs are they buying?
Is this a "consignment" or "payment-on-sale" contract? In other words, are they buying CD’s outright, or are they allowed to return unsold products to you?
Will they continue to buy after the first purchase?
What other labels do they represent?
Will they buy any of your other material?

Any decent Creative Commons Record Label sites?

February 282010

Bit of a weird question, but can anyone find any cool independent record labels online with interesting upcoming artists who distribute their music for free?

Miasmah is a cool little electronic label that does most of it’s mp3’s for free. I think they have a few CDs for general sale nowadays, but most of their output is still free to download at

www.miasmah.com

The website is pretty cool too, but it looks as if it might be undergoing some changes at the minute.
