Godspeed You! Black Emperor (formerly punctuated Godspeed You Black Emperor! and commonly abbreviated to GYBE or GY!BE) are a Canadian post-rock band which originated from Montreal, Quebec in 1994. They were the first outside act to release their recordings through Constellation, an influential independent record label also located in Montreal.

The band is perhaps best known for their lengthy instrumental songs and large membership. With nine semi-permanent members, they create prolonged tracks which utilize short movements, wide volume changes, and numerous recorded and sampled sounds. Studio albums typically contain no more than five songs, and often omit the band’s name and track titles from the cover and artwork.

After the release of their debut album in 1997, the group toured regularly from 1998 to 2002. In 2003, the band announced an indefinite hiatus in order for band members to pursue other musical interests. An interview in February 2008 reported the band had broken up,[2] but this was later confirmed as false.[3] Currently, the group has no foreseeable plans to reconvene.

Is it possible to be completly independent and be successful on a major label without any of the major
labels help? In terms of marketing and distribution? Since cd cells are falling and the major labels making the 360 deals standard and the record industry devilish busniess and deals is it possible to be a indie label and have a successful run like motown in today’s society?

Yes, these days more than ever. Lots of bands and artists are having success without the help of a major label. Independent labels and independent artists now have the same global access that the major labels have (except for commercial radio). It is very possible for a group to establish themselves with the help of the internet, and do very well. Most major labels even expect you to build a fan base and create success yourself before they will sign you. A number of bands will turn down a major label offer and stick with an indie label.

Chicane is known for the singles “Offshore”, an Ibiza dance anthem included in thousands of compilations in both chill-out and dance versions; “Saltwater”, which featured vocals by Clannad member Máire Brennan and is ranked among the best-ever trance singles[attribution needed]; and the UK number-one hit “Don’t Give Up”, featuring vocals by Bryan Adams, and also a top ten hit on singles charts across Europe.

Far from the Maddening Crowds, Chicane’s debut album, is still considered a seminal release among the trance music community,[2] while the second album, Behind the Sun, was certified gold in the UK. In 2007, after the hindrance of an ultimately unreleased album in the intervening time, Somersault was released on Bracegirdle’s independent record label.

In addition, Bracegirdle also worked under the aliases Disco Citizens, producing a handful of less radio-friendly, vocal-less tracks with a stronger progressive house sound. Working with singer Vanessa St. James and producer Mr. Joshua, Bracegirdle was part of the Mr. Joshua Presents Espiritu project, known for the song “In Praise of the Sun”, released with both English and French vocals. Nick has also gone by the name “Rebel Transcanner” to produce a remix of Tomski’s “14 Hours To Save The Earth.” Nick Bracegirdle has also used the alias Sitvac to produce a one-time single, “Wishful Thinking.”

Nirvana first played the song the night before it was demoed. Bassist Krist Novoselic recalled that it, “originally sounded like a Bad Brains song. Then Kurt turned it into a pop song”. Cobain went home and reworked the song, playing the revised version of it over the phone to Novoselic. The band recorded “In Bloom” with producer Butch Vig at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin during April 1990. The material recorded at Smart Studios was intended for the group’s second album for the independent record label Sub Pop. The song originally had a bridge section that Vig removed. Novoselic said that the after the band recorded the song, Vig cut out the bridge from the 16-track master tape with a razor blade and threw it in the garbage. The songs from these sessions were placed on a demo tape that circulated amongst the music industry, generating interest in the group among major record labels.

After signing to DGC Records, Nirvana began recording its second album Nevermind in May 1991. “In Bloom” was one of the first songs the band recorded during the album sessions at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California; Vig thought it would be good to start recording a song previously recorded at Smart Studios. The arrangements for “In Bloom” and the other songs previously recorded with Vig in 1990 were largely unchanged; the recently hired drummer Dave Grohl stayed mostly with what his predecessor Chad Channing had recorded, but added more power and precision to the recording. Cobain sang progressively “harder” during the recording of the song, which made it difficult for Vig to balance the volume levels between the verses and choruses. Vig recalled that he had to change the input level “on the fly” and hoped that Cobain would not “change the phrasing or do something different” while recording.

Cobain chose not to overdub a harmony vocal part during the Smart Studios sessions, possibly due to time constraints.During the Nevermind sessions Vig had Grohl sing harmonies on the song. The drummer had difficulty hitting the proper notes, but ultimately was able to sing what Vig wanted. Vig often had to trick Cobain, who was averse to performing multiple takes, into recording additional takes for overdubs on the record. The producer convinced Cobain to double-track his vocals on “In Bloom” by telling him, “John Lennon did it.” After doubling Cobain’s vocals, Vig decided he might as well double Grohl’s and had the drummer record an additional track of backing harmonies.

Off Nirvana’s Second Album, Nevermind

The band was relatively unknown until they hit success with their third studio album, Standing in the Way of Control.
ossip was formed in 1999 in Olympia, Washington with vocalist Beth Ditto , guitarist Nathan “Brace Paine,” and drummer Kathy Mendonca. In 1999 the Independent record label, K Records, released The Gossip’s first recording, their eponymous debut EP, The Gossip.

Their next release was their first album That’s Not What I Heard and was released by the record label Kill Rock Stars on January 23, 2001. In between the release of their second album, they released the EP Arkansas Heat on May 7, 2002. Movement, the group’s second studio album, followed one year later and was released on May 6, 2003. In November 2003, two months after the release of their first live album Undead in NYC on September 9, drummer Kathy Mendonca left the band to pursue a career as a midwife. Established punk drummer Hannah Blilie joined to replace her. In 2005, the band performed at North East Sticks Together.

The first release featuring new drummer Hannah Blilie was the band’s next album Standing in the Way of Control. It was released on January 24, 2006 on Kill Rock Stars and later on in 2006 on UK independent label Back Yard Recordings.
