The music of Stockton’s Wing has evolved into an exciting blend of traditional and contemporary Irish music and song, performed with power and precision by some of the finest musicians in Ireland. Back in 1977, in Ennis, Co. Clare, the five member group including all-Ireland champions, Paul Roche, Maurice Lennon, Kieran Hanrahan and Tommy Hayes with Tony Callinan won the traditional section of a Guinness sponsored talent competition in Limerick (the rock section was won by a little known group from Mount Temple School, called U2). As a result of this competition they secured a recording contract with Tara Records and released their debut album, Stockton’s Wing.
Singer/songwriter, Mike Hanrahan, replaced Tony Callinan in 1979 and in the spring of 1980 they released their second album on Tara “Take a Chance.” The album featured some original music and marked the arrival of a progressive force into the world of Irish music. Following the success of the album, they toured extensively, creating a storm of enthusiasm at major Folk Festivals across Europe.
At Ballisodare Folk Festival in the west of Ireland, they met with Australian, Steve Cooney, who joined forces shortly afterwards, playing bass guitar and didgeridoo. In 1982, the Band released their third album “Light in the Western Sky” – a highly polished album which represented a significant shift in their musical direction, focusing more on the band’s creative original material. The album featured two hit singles “Beautiful Affair” and “Walk Away.” It also featured a haunting composition “The Golden Stud” a combination of Aboriginal and Irish music.
Percussionist, Tommy Hayes, left the band in 1983 and was replaced by Fran Breen on drums and Peter Keenan on keyboards. After listening to the band, a critic for the New York Times wrote “they were eclectic, electric, passionate, personal, innovative and powerful.” In 1985, a live album “Stockton’s Wing Live – Take One” was recorded in Galway and Dublin capturing that ‘eclectic, electric’ sound and enjoyed major success This album will be re-released on CD in the coming months on the Tara Music label.
Tours of America, Canada, Europe and Australia kept the band away from the recording studios until the autumn of 1986 when they recorded their fifth album “Full Flight.” The album contained no less than four hit singles – “Why wait until tomorrow”, “Avondale”, “New Clare Revival” and “So many miles.” The group’s sixth album, produced by Steve Cooney, received critical acclaim in America where the group headlined major music festivals in Chicago, Boston and New York.
In the summer of 1988 they shared the stage with Michael Jackson in Cork. The following year they made a guest appearance with Sammy Davis Jnr. in Dublin as part of his world tour with Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli. In 1990 Stockton’s Wing went on location to take part in the Noel Pearson/Jim Sheridan film production of the John B. Keane play “The Field” which featured Oscar nominee Richard Harris and John Hurt.

The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: ‘Let Me Be’ by Miguel Migs feat. Fred Ross.
“Miguel Migs (real name Michael Steward, also known by the pseudonym Petalpusher) is a Deep House Disc jockey and producer from San Francisco, California.
Migs began his music career at 18 years old, as a lead guitarist and songwriter for a Santa Cruz local band called Zion Sounds. The band split up in the mid-1990s, however Zion Sounds african and jamaican style is said to have been a major influence in Migs personal career. After the band dissolved, Miguel Migs went on to explore electronic music production.
Miguel has produced over 100 remixes to date, including remixes for a number of mainstream artists. Such artists include Britney Spears, Macy Gray and Lionel Richie. Migs has been associated with a variety of record labels, most notably Naked Music Recordings.
In 1998 Miguel co-founded the deep house record label Transport Recordings, along with fellow DJ MFR and Naked Music label director Bruno Ybarra. According to a 2004 article by Stephen Thanabalan in DJ Magazine, Migs was credited for his soul-driven vibes and hailed as one of the pioneers of the nascent house and chill-out revival scene alongside Dimitri from Paris and Bob Sinclair as a result of his early foray into Deep House in the late 1990s and early 2000s, releasing several highly sought after singles and remixes under the Petalpusher pseudonym. Most recently, in 2005, he founded Salted Music, a record label under Om Records.
Miguel Migs stands at the forefront of electronic musics soulful realm. Whether tackling his original productions or remixes, he achieves an organic-soulful sound by combining the best of both the electronic music world and live instrumentation.
For many years, Miguels productions have been included on countless compilations and his records have slid into the crates of top DJs across the globe. His music has also landed on numerous TV Shows, including Six Feet Under, Sex in the City, and MTVs Road Rules and Real World.
Contrary to many of his club-centric DJ/producer peers, Miguel is not always concerned with the potential dance floor appeal of his soulful tracks. Its music you can enjoy and listen to at home, in the club, or anywhere. Not necessarily just to rock the dance floor. explains the Northern California native, who grew up with a true love of reggae, soul, classic rock, jazz, hip-hop and just about everything else.
His impressive discography includes more than 100 original productions and remixes on seminal independent labels such as Salted Music, Naked Music, Astralwerks, Yoshitoshi, NRK, Black Vinyl, Large, Chez, Transport Recordings, Om Records, Defected Records and many others. His recordings have consistently made waves in the underground circuit and have landed on DJ hype charts internationally. He is highly regarded when it comes to remixes, having worked with major label artists such as Macy Gray, Lionel Ritchie and Britney Spears. Miguel additionally has released numerous mix CD compilations on labels including Defected, Naked Music, Southport Weekender and NRK.
Never one to sit still, Migs started his own label Salted Music in 2004. Having been associated with an extensive number of labels throughout his career, he came to realize a desire to have his own base, a vehicle for building his own catalogue of quality material. Salted Music is a foundation for Migs to choose and release music that inspires him, as well as release his own productions and compilations.
As a producer, Miguel realizes a strong connection between his electronic music productions and live musical background. He writes his own lyrics and plays his own instruments, be it guitar, bass, percussion or keyboard.
As a DJ, Miguel was recognized and nominated for best DJ in the 2004 House Music Awards held in London. Migs maintains the same approach to his sets as to his productions, combining a variety of influences and styles fused together. The result is funky, deep, soulful, bumping house music. I like to mix it up and keep it moving smoothly, taking the dance floor through a very spontaneous mix into the realms of quality, deep house music depending on the mood in the room, says Migs. But, whether its vocal, tracky, dubby, moody, percussive or broken beat, the sound always remains soulful and funky.”

Hi guys! Just keep in mind that this video is a call to action about supporting Independent artists rather than trying to be a complain-fest about major labels. A complain-fest is another topic for another vlog!

Hi Everyone!
Hope you have had a fab week and that the weekend has been enjoyable. I’ve been taking the weekend to re-set and am enjoying it as it’s much needed.
This video really only scratches the surface on the realities of the music business and is based on my personal experience in the business dealing on the Major and Indie levels. Stats are taken from reports from media transcripts from conference panel session press reports and from my own personal knowledge. I hope to delve a little deeper in some future vlogs. I think it’s very important to bring awareness and banish some myths that keep on being perpetuated. These myths cause confusion and unrealistic expectations which makes some artists’ creative journey that much more difficult.

Indie acts rely mainly on the consistent support of fans to continue to create their art, earn a living and get the word out, as opposed to Major label artists who have the financial and marketing backing of a corporation or corporations. Please support Indie artists and don’t wait for them to get at Major deal or become ‘famous’ to show your support. Buy their music now, spread the word now and attend shows if they do them. Some artists may have the chance to see if a Major label home is the right one for them, but many will not or will chose not to go down that path for various reasons. The Indie career path is a legitimate choice, just like the one of going the Major label route. A Major label deal does not validate talent.
Please take time out to check out the artists I mentioned in this video. There are many more that I’d like to introduce you to and will do so in other videos.

I just read things about the music industry, one thing i noticed saying was that Major labels take most of the bands money for other purposes, whilst an Indie label gives most of the money to the band … is this true ?
All I know is — indie or not — you’re not going to make much moolah making music.

Claude Vonstroke – Big N Round (Maetrik Remix)
What started as a fake name and small booking at a friends birthday party has spiraled into an international DJ career for Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw.) One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with Claude VonStroke. It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer.
Raised in the suburbs Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojos Midnight Funk Association on local radio. At age 16, after mastering the small 4-track recorder used at his high school, Barclay and good friend Jamie Osborne looked through the phone book and visited Juan Atkins fledgling Metroplex recordings. They tried unsuccessfully to convince Atkins to hire them as sound engineers and music producers. Little did they know, Mr. Atkins would soon go on to become the godfather of techno.
After University in New York and a 4 diversion in Hollywood working as an assistant on a series of big budget feature films, Barclay moved back to Detroit and re-discovered his passion for electronic music. He was initially inspired by listening to drum n bass mix tapes from the UK. He built a massive live rig of synthesizers and samplers and played live at local Poor Boy underground warehouse parties until he lost all of his music in an electrical outage.
One year later, Barclay re-located to San Francisco and decided to merge his passion for music and film by releasing Intellect, a six hour DVD package, self-directed and produced, covering the worldwide electronic music scene and including interviews with over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Dubfire, and Theo Parrish. The main goal of the Intellect project was to make an informative DVD that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw taking lessons from his own DVD by starting a record label called dirtybird and a production career under the name Claude VonStroke.
Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American tech funk label and has released over 20 EPs. Claude VonStrokes very first record, Deep Throat, was a major hit of 2005. The success of the single was followed up by Whos Afraid of Detroit?, another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the best track of 2006 in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full-length debut album, Beware of the Bird to outstanding reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the underground. Since then, he has recorded over 25 remixes for a range of commercial and underground artists from Indy rock group The Rapture to Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson.
In an effort to give something back to the community Claude unveiled a deeper techno label called mothership in 2007. A large percentage of the labels proceeds go to a music school for children in Claudes hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This label features a more euro flavor featuring groups like Catz n Dogz, Italoboyz Maetrik and Voodeux.
Claude has also headlined almost every major club, festival and basement after-party in the world from Fabric to Panorama Bar to DEdge. The outdoor dirtybird parties in San Franciscos scenic Golden Gate Park have also become a legendary summer destination point for both locals and international travelers. A VonStroke DJ set is based on meticulous track selection and outrageous risk taking. He always takes time to find the special ass-wiggling cuts that keep the dance-floor percolating.
In 2009, Claude is very excited to be mixing Fabric 46. He will also return to the studio and release his 2nd artist album.

The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: ‘Follow Me’ by Tiefschwarz.
“Tiefschwarz are a German electro house group formed by two brothers, Ali Schwarz and Basti Schwarz in 1996.
They performed deep house DJ sets in some of the biggest clubs in Germany and Switzerland as well as in major foreign cities and became increasingly popular in the house scene.
Full bio
Tiefschwarz was formed in 1996 by two brothers – Ali and Basti Schwarz – who have been successful DJs for over a decade. Peter Hoff, who runs the Benztown studios in Stuttgart, completes the Tiefschwarz production team. Ali and Basti came up with the name for their project after a DJ gig. Tiefschwarz, which is German for ‘deep black’, is a mixture of their last name, Schwarz, and their love for deep house.
In 1990 Ali opened the “on-u” club in Stuttgart, which became a pioneer of the German club scene. Three years later came the “red dog” club, which quickly became known throughout the world as a top address for deep house. Here, resident DJs Ali and Basti played alongside the likes of DJ greats such as Tony Humphries, Master At Work, Frankie Feliciano, Mike Dunn, Mousse T, Matthew Herbert, Lary Heard, Chris Coco, Matthias Heilbronn and many others.
Besides their work as resident DJs, Ali and Basti have been travelling together throughout Europe and overseas since 1995. They’ve played at countless major events and the most popular clubs in both Germany and Switzerland (Zürich, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basle, etc.) as well as in major foreign cities, such as Miami (W.M.C.), New York, Washington, Melbourne, Sydney, Prague, Sarajevo, Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Rimini, Stockholm, London, Leeds, Sheffield, Ibiza, etc.
After six years of DJing and promoting, the two brothers began producing their own tracks. They co-founded the “continuemusics” label in 1996, on which their first single, “24 seven,” with remixes by Boris Dlugosh and Michi Lange, was released along with four other tracks.
In 1998, Tiefschwarz signed a record deal with edel/benztown records. This proved to be a turning point in their career. Their first release, “music,” featuring Joy Denalane of the hip-hop formation Freundeskreis, was not only a hit in Germany (9 weeks at No. 1 on the MTV Germany Dance Charts and No. 1 on Germany’s Club Charts), but proved to be very successful in the UK as well. “music” was licensed to the famous “wave music” label in N.Y.C. run by François Kevokian and was remixed by Matthias Heilbronn.
Tiefschwarz have remixed around 30 tracks for artists such as Ultra Naté, Byron Stingily, Jam & Spoon, Jennifer Paige, Randy Crawford, Master At Work, Earth Wind and Fire, Shakatak, Mousse T., AWA band, Whirlpool prod., Sabrina Johnson and Sharon Philips.
The name Tiefschwarz stands high alongside other legendary German acts such as Boris Dlugosch, Mousse T., Knee Deep, Ian Pooley, Dixon, Jazzanova, Rainer Trüby, Ata and Vincenzo. As DJs, Tiefschwarz have gained a great reputation on the international house scene.
Their debut album, “ral 9005″, is a skilled and smooth voyage through their daringly diverse cosmos of musical experience. As varied as their influences may be, Tiefschwarz never fail to integrate their own, undeniably unique sound. “ral 9005″ covers the spectrum — from the playful excursions into Nu Jazz (mars, fusion I, fusion II) and the soul-filled deep house and garage tracks (there is, you, never, city-sounds, music) to 80s beats (springtime), down beat electro (follow me), soundtrack-style pop (bye bye baby) and kicking club music (no more trouble, acid soul, sky diving). This is all polished off by an intricate and powerful production.
Their second album Eat Books includes the well known track Damage featuring Everything But The Girl vocalist Tracey Thorn.”
