Working for a record label – Hip-Hop/R&B?

March 82010

I love music, specially Hip-hop/R&B. My dream job would be to work at one of their record labels. I have applied MANY of times, but since I dont have the experience, I want to know, WHERE can I get some???? I have applied for internships, but those are hard to get! Any ideas?

Hey you and me both. I have a passion for music, especially rap and R&B. I would love to become an A&R at a major or even independent record label. Internships are very hard to get, I’ve tired many myself. Why dont you email me and we can share some ideas, since we’re on the same page : danielleshosmart@yahoo.com

오래된 노래 / Old Song (Tribute to Kim DongRyul)

March 82010

Long time no post!
My life has been quite eventful these few months- I moved to NY for an internship at a music label. It was a sudden decision to move here but I feel like I am getting closer to my dream :) Hopefully, I will have time to finish my demo songs. thanks all for your support !

This is my tribute to one of my favorite artists and 前辈 Kim Dong Ryul from Korea.

Old Song (storyline)

Song is about a singer/songwriter who find this old cassette tape which contained a love song that he once wrote for his girlfriend as her birthday present when they were both young. The recording of the song had a bad piano arrangement, no lyrics but at the time it made her very happy. Listening to this old recording, I reminisce the time when we both used to be so innocent and child-like. (puppy love) Now, I am singing this song on the stage/radio hoping that you are somewhere out there listening to this same old song.

Music and Lyric written by Kimdongryul (graduate of Berklee, Korean Pop-singer)

I wish I could be half as talented as Kim Dongryul : ) I need to work harder!

I need some advice on getting internships.?

March 62010

I’m only a freshmen in college, but my major is public relations and I really need some adivce on getting good internships. I would love to work in the the music industry once I graduate, but I’m not sure the best move I can do to get there. I go to school in Texas and I really don’t want to make my career here, and I would eventually like to have some sort of a job set up for when I graduate. I think it would be cool to be a pulicist for a record label. Please help!!

If I were you, I’d transfer to a school in the area that I want to live. You should talk to career services- they often hook people up with interviews and jobs. I got an internship through one of my professors and am now working at a world-known accounting firm! Good luck!! :-)

Internship at a record label questions…?

March 42010

I’m 14 and very interested in the music business. I want to know how old I have to be to apply, what I should include in a resume, where I should start, and what areas I could possibly work in. If it usually varies per label…what typically are the answers? Other useful information would be very appreciated! Thank you.

Hey there, I admire you enthusiasm but from my experience record labels, publishers, booking agents etc… usually hire interns that are in college so they can compensate them with college credit rather than cash. Interns work in all areas and all functions of the music business but they usually start out by supporting an assistant and / or an executive by doing things like organizing files, making copies, data entry or basic and repetitive web tasks. If they begin to trust you with such tasks they will begin to give you more and more assistant type work and when an internship goes very well (pending luck and timing) they can get hired OR get a great referral to another company that needs an assistant or coordinator.

My advice honestly is to go to lots of all ages shows and try to meet the performers that you like and ask how you can become a member of their street team or if they need an intern. Working with bands in this way is a great way to meet people and build up your resume for when your are a few years older and can approach more formal companies… But you never know, try small record labels or small publishing companies with a cold call – you are offering them free or at least very cheap labor.

As for what’s on the resume… that’s a hard one considering your age. Maybe your grades if they are good or a list of your music related interests or anything you have done in or out of school that demonstrates that you are reliable, intelligent and a big fan of music.

Very best of luck,

Rick

Getting a job at a record label. How?

March 22010

I am in love with music. I love going to shows, venues, etc. I love finding new bands. I just LOVE the music atmosphere.
I have been thinking, and I think it would be a great career or just experience , to work at a record label/company. I don’t know all of the job descriptions, or all of the job titles available. I have heard working in mail room is a great place to start. I have een been thinking being a secretary or something other. If anyone could help me with the following:
1.)list of websites with information on the job titles and their descriptions.
2.)how to get my foot in the door.
3.)would i need a degree? if so, in what?
4.)websites that will help me find a listing of internships
5.)lists of different record labels

Really, just anything. If you havent noticed, I don’t know too much. I want to learn though. So if you could supply ANY information, it would truely be greatly appreciated. :)
Oh and if it helps, I am into death metal, screamo, alternative music.
Or, to be more specific. I go to a lot of shows to see bands who sound like the following:
Bring Me The Horizon
Have Heart
Dance Gavin Dance
Bullet For My Valentine
Underoath
The Devil Wears Prada
Suicide Silence.

You get the picture.lol

Roadrunner Records, Fueled by Ramen are some majors that you may be able to get your foot in the door. Most jobs are going to be A&R internships. You can also get into band managing, and booking. It also depends on what your skills are. If you’re more on the recording end, you could possibly get a job at a recording studio as an assistant.

How do you start working in the music industry?

February 282010

My dream is to work in the music industry, maybe for a record label or to be a band manager/tour manager but I honestly don’t know how to get started. My major is public relations and I’m just about to finish my second year of college. I just need some advice on getting in the industry. Like what are some good places to look for internships? What are some things I need to do other than school? I just need help!
Oh and by the way, I’m not looking to work with huge musicians or record labels. I’m more into small record labels and musicians that aren’t as big as britney spears or anything.

Go ask them. Seriously. Contact the labels directly through their websites.

Jobs in the music industry?

February 242010

Hi, I’m about to graduate high school, and all I know is I want to do something within the music industry, whether if it’s being an A&R, my first choice, or just something with bands and record labels. Any suggestions on which majors to study in or if maybe trying to get a job at a record label (job or internship) first, then going to college would be better. Any help!? Thanks!

Record labels would be more likely to take an intern that is a college student.
If you definitely want to go into music, majoring in something like music theory would be a good idea, with a minor in composition or something. Check out schools like Juliard and Berklee (not Berkeley)

Internships with record companies?

February 222010

I am going to be a senior this year in high school and next summer i would like an internship with a record label. Any ideas on where to apply and what should i major in during college if i would like to do something in the music industry? thanks for all the help :]

Skip the record companies. Everyone goes there. If you went to Nashville and offered to be a "personal assistant" to a struggling singer , you could break into the business that way. If she ever makes it big, you will too. If not, you tried. /

Internship for a record company?

February 202010

Hey peoples, i wanted to know what’s the best approach and way to get an internship for a music label. i’m an aspiring producer who wants to learn more about music business. i just graduated from college this past feb with a degree in web administration but that was just something to fall back on. music is my main interest. please give me advice and your best answer.

thanks
i’m really trying to break into the industry as an exclusive producer. i want all major artist to call me for a beat or any director to call me for a score for a movie. i’m not giving up on this.

um, well my boyfriend had an internship at a record label. basically he just did some research online first. he looked up the record label he wanted to intern at, looked up the staff, found the direct line for one of them, and just called and plead his case as quickly as he could lol. that guy who said look desperate is right, lol. it sounds silly but he beat out all the other applicants. generally, people who started out as interns are more sympathetic to people trying to get an internship. try to contact someone who worked their way up from the bottom for a better chance.

if you want to go the old fashion route, you can go to the label’s website FAQ’s. They usually have information about where to send your resume for an internship there.

music industry internships are VERY competitive; there are a lot of people applying for only a few intern positions. you want to find a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd of other candidates. learn a lot of about the label beforehand, so they’ll be able to see youre serious about the internship in your interview.

usually, they only give internships to matriculated college students. my boyfriend wasn’t one and still got through, but he’s a rare exception. most labels are really strict about that rule so you might want to enroll in a music business program like NYU’s. they’re known for getting their students great internships at major labels:
http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/business/

once you get the internship, network, network, and network some more. make friends with ALL the staff and work hard. an internship is like the number 1 way into a job at a music label. the more they like you, the more inclined they’ll be to help you succeed. even if you dont get a job at the label, they can still help you connect with other artists and companies. if you fail to make them take notice of you, they won’t care about what happens to you.
