do you have to write your own music to audition for a record label?

March 82010

to audition for record labels, you have to send demos right?
but what if you don’t write your own songs?
can you get accepted just by singing songs by other artists?

i’m just curious :)

You can send covers as well. Even if you imitate others but put your own spin to it, that is what matters. If they like your voice, they will give you songs to sing or whatever.

Edit…… One poster stated that cover songs are for Bar Bands is TOTALLY wrong. Do you know how many rappers copy old songs? Take for instance Puff Daddy.
He took STings’s Every breadth I take and made it into a sort of rap and made millions.
This doesn’t include all the other rappers who took old Stevie Wonders and made them their own. The main thing is how you yourself, make it your own. If its good, record it.

When a musician changes his record label who keeps the rights to sell the music?

March 42010

The musician or the record label?

More than likely, everything that was recorded while the artist was under contract with record label A is owned by record label A even if was never released, unless record label B buys the songs from label A. Every new song the artist records after the switch belongs to label B. In rare cass when the artist is powerfull enough to keep ownership of his music he can take it with him where ever he is signed because he alone owns it….this is extremely rare!

does anyone know of any sites to apply for free music/record label internships?

March 22010

GREAT QUESTION!…

Here’s the answer:
NEVER try and do any of this stuff over the internet! Here is why…
I’ve interned at 3 major labels. All of them have led me to the others, which led me to my job now. Your life in the music industry is ONLY as good as the people you know.
My advice:
Don’t whimp out by going to a site to fill out crap about being an intern! Take your first step and call, ask for the HR person or let them know you’re looking for an internship. The labels know exactly where to send you.
Most labels will only accept you as an intern if you are in college, and currently get college credit for it.
Be aggresive and let them know who you are. Work hard and show up on time. Ask to learn more. If you follow the above steps people will want to hire you on full-time. Almost every one of my friends started at labels and we all work there now. (Sony, Capitol, Universal)
Have fun!

I am a solo singer/guitarist and I am wondering how I am supposed to present my music to a record label?

February 282010

I want to get signed to a record label, but i don’t know how to present my music to them. It’s so hard to get together a band, so I am trying a solo career.

I make pop/rock music and I am 19 years old.

Any suggestions?

Also, there’s a ton of info on this site:

www.knowthemusicbiz.com

It’s basically set up as a resource for artists who don’t really have any knowledge of the music biz yet. I’d take a look at their wiki first, because it walks you through the different parts of the process step by step, then I would try the other articles.

http://www.knowthemusicbiz.com/index.php/BIZ-WIKI/Introduction.html

But yea, I’d read up a lot before even thinking about getting signed to a label. Not to say that and make you think, you know, "Oh man this is too intimidating." It just takes a little research first.

Good luck!

Who owns the right to music if the Record Label has gone bust.?

February 262010

I have loads of old dance tunes on vinyl, and want to sell some mix cd’s….am i allowed?

The rights in the music are the artist’s and not the label so you can’t unless the recording is more than, I think, 70 years old.

What is a good name for a record label?
