i don't think last.fm is an accurate way to rate popularity, as a good amount of people who use last.fm are generally people interested in music other than what's "popular"

most of the bands i listen to, people have no idea who they are.

Indie has been adopted as a genre term – like it or not. Its definition is fluid, making it an easy umbrella term. I try not to, but I can’t help but find myself using it at times, but usually in combination with say, alternative, or experimental rock. Although, no one can nail the genre down – so it falls apart on any kind of further investigation. Its a bad habit I should really break, but I’m lazy.

But to answer the question at hand – I don’t know if its underrated, but I think that it might be underappreciated. If only because, if it falls under the definition of being on an independent label, less people are aware of these bands, so they really can’t appreciate them.

It depends on the company, some companys strictly want songs written by you, some want som writen by you AND covered by you (covering a song is preforming someone elses song) and some strictly want only covered songs.

Cover songs are for bar bands.

Unless you’re talking in the sense that you have a ghost writer who writes the songs that you sing, either because your writer can’t sing, or you can’t write, or both. Elton John is known for that. His lyrics are terrible if he wrote them himself, so he gets some dude whose name I forget (but I think it’s Bernie) to write for him, and it works. But if you sing your own version of Benny and the Jets you’re going nowhere.

You can send covers as well. Even if you imitate others but put your own spin to it, that is what matters. If they like your voice, they will give you songs to sing or whatever.

Edit…… One poster stated that cover songs are for Bar Bands is TOTALLY wrong. Do you know how many rappers copy old songs? Take for instance Puff Daddy.
He took STings’s Every breadth I take and made it into a sort of rap and made millions.
This doesn’t include all the other rappers who took old Stevie Wonders and made them their own. The main thing is how you yourself, make it your own. If its good, record it.

I don’t think independent music is underrated anymore at all. For example, Sufjan Stevens definitely does not have a "commercialized sound," and he is on an independent label, and has over 600,000 listeners on Last.fm, which is basically about twice as much as Paramore, who is extremely popular and pretty generic. Same with Arcade Fire, they have about a million people listening (if you add up the number of listeners for Arcade Fire and The Arcade Fire, since it gets tagged both ways) to them on Last.fm, which is almost as many as Fall Out Boy and Paramore added together.
