Do you consider Radiohead to be an indie band?

January 262010

I personally consider their music to have that independent mentality thanks to the feel of DIY and the experimentation of Kid A and
Amnesiac. But when you look at the labels that they have been signed to, it gets complicated.

From 1992-2005 they were signed to Parlophone and Capitol records, both of which are parented by EMI (one of the mainstream "big four", which is the exact opposite of indie.) Then they dropped EMI as their label and released In Rainbows independently on the internet and then under XL Recordings (an indie label) they released it in a physical copy. However, the album was also connected/released by TBD (previously Side One) which is parented by ATO (which is parented by RCA, which is owned by Sony BMG).
Therefore, Radiohead started out releasing under major labels, released indie a bit, but still had connections with a "big four" label.

With all of this considered, is Radiohead an indie band in your opinion? They’ve been on an independant label, but they’ve also been signed to EMI and Sony BMG.
Thanks. =]

no matter what label they are signed to, i personally don’t think radiohead can be put into the ‘indie’ catagory – or any.

they are so different from any other band, and so original. i wouldn’t be able to catagorise them if i tried. and i prefer it that way.

    they are not an "indie" band because they are too mainstream. and they were signed to major labels for a long time. right now they don’t have a label and released their last album themselves. still an awesome band. radiohead rocks
