Deep House Music: Plej – Lay Of The Land

May 262010

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: ‘Lay Of The Land’ by Plej.

“”Deep and Funky with smooth mellow beats over perfect lyrics and it’s totaly addictive!”

These are the few keywords to describe Electronic Music From The Swedish West Coast by Plej. Although entire album is great, specially “Blue” and “You” are just fantastic tracks and already in my all time favorites list.Like one of their fans said on their myspace page;
“How can you find so much warmth without sun?”

Paul Sullivan of BBC reviewed this amazing album immaculately:
The name Plej was originally created for the record label of Swedish siblings Arvid and Ertik Niklasson. But as their studio antics progressed, they decided that making music was more fun than selling it – and adopted the name as a production moniker. The hazy, black and white images of forests and mountains that adorn the cover of their debut LP Electronic Music From The Swedish Leftcoast seem to somehow suit the wobbly, wistful semantics of their nom-de-disque, hinting simultaneously at the dreamily organic contents that lie within.

Plej’s previous output hasn’t been abundant but it has been frighteningly consistent. Anyone who has laid ears on their Shimmer and Sky series EPs or their recent “You” track will know already their penchant for creating naturally unfurling deep house which occasionally dips into more experimental micro-house territory – a style they endearingly refer to it as small house.

For those that haven’t yet been seduced by the duo’s velvety caresses, this album is as good a place as any to get acquainted. Opening cut “Lay Of The Land” immediately offers an example of how they like to infuse their studio beats with a sense of outdoorsy lushness, glazing their 4-4 chugs with delicate layers of coruscating synths and not a little magical moonlight.

The LP unwinds in a similarly rustic manner. The smudged, glacial “Blue”, the trumpet-enhanced “Seasons” (the first single from the LP), the insouciant harmonies on “Song”, the shimmering disco tendrils of “Jabo’s Night Out” and the soft-as-snowflake funk of “Shimmer”, all conjure up unashamed feelings of well-being and optimism and make for a thoroughly addictive record.

“Soulset” and “A Jabo Thought” provide the obligatory downtempo moments, but really this LP is about moving club sounds into arenas of experimentation and sexiness. Lying somewhere between the whispered grooves of Herbert, the quirkiness of Isolee and the lush depth of Naked Music, it’s the sound of deep house getting its kit off and running joyously through the hills.”

MAC MALL in Hawaii PART 2 at Mac Dre, NORTH SHORE, Wash House Music, FIJI, Tats, drunk RAPS

May 212010

PTBTV aka Pushin’ The Bay EXCLUSIVE! In this exclusive / raw video (Part 2 of 2), Mac Mall brings the Pushin’ The Bay staff to Hawaii. This is PART 2 at Waikiki Beach (speaks on Mac Dre), with crazy rare footage at Wash House Music aka Rappers Island, drunk freestyles / singing, custom tats / tattoos artwork, beautiful blue shores / seas and most importantly, showin’ the viewers how true playas / macks get down.

Waikiki is a neighborhood of Honolulu, in the City & County of Honolulu, on the south shore of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Waikiki Beach is the shoreline fronting Waikiki.

The neighborhood extends from the Ala Wai Canal (a channel dug to drain former wetlands) on the west and north, to Diamond Head on the east. The name means spouting fresh water in Hawaiian for springs and streams that fed wetlands that once separated Waikiki from the interior. Waikiki has long been a place of relaxation. In particular, the area was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s. Much like the locals and tourists of today, Hawaiian royalty enjoyed surfing at Waikiki on early forms of longboards. Although not royalty as his name might suggest, Duke Kahanamoku, a local surfer born at the turn of the century and credited with popularizing the sport of surfing, is immortalized in a statue near the main strip of the Waikiki Beach. The statue, along with the numerous lei visitors to the beach place in the statue’s outreached hands, can be viewed in real-time through the Waikiki Beach Webcam.

Andre Hicks (July 5, 1970 November 1, 2004), better known by his stage name Mac Dre, was one of the originators of hyphy and is generally considered the creator of Thizz music. He worked with well-known artists such as Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Richie Rich, Keak da Sneak, E-40 ,Daz Dillinger, Baby Bash, B-Legit, San Quinn, Yukmouth, Andre Nickatina, P.S.D, Mac Mall and Too $hort. He also provided an uncredited hook to the track “Gotta Survive” from Young Lay’s Black N’ Dangerous album.

His lyrics were largely based on his neighborhood known by those around him as “The Crest”, short for Country Club Crest, a particularly rough area on the Northside of Vallejo, California. His music under the record label Young Black Brotha gained popularity throughout the Bay Area in the early 1990s. In the mid to late 1990s, he received national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. During his music career, he released many hit singles, such as “Too Hard for the Fuckin’ Radio,” “California Livin,” and more recently “Feelin’ Myself” and “Get Stupid”. His music continues to be released posthumously. He was the creator of the “Thizzle Dance”, as well as many other popular dances which were referred to as giggin’. The song that ignited this new underground party movement was called “Thizzle Dance,” which appeared on his album entitled Thizzelle Washington.

Claude Vonstroke – Big N Round (Maetrik Remix)

May 12010

Claude Vonstroke – Big N Round (Maetrik Remix)

What started as a fake name and small booking at a friends birthday party has spiraled into an international DJ career for Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw.) One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with Claude VonStroke. It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer.
Raised in the suburbs Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojos Midnight Funk Association on local radio. At age 16, after mastering the small 4-track recorder used at his high school, Barclay and good friend Jamie Osborne looked through the phone book and visited Juan Atkins fledgling Metroplex recordings. They tried unsuccessfully to convince Atkins to hire them as sound engineers and music producers. Little did they know, Mr. Atkins would soon go on to become the godfather of techno.

After University in New York and a 4 diversion in Hollywood working as an assistant on a series of big budget feature films, Barclay moved back to Detroit and re-discovered his passion for electronic music. He was initially inspired by listening to drum n bass mix tapes from the UK. He built a massive live rig of synthesizers and samplers and played live at local Poor Boy underground warehouse parties until he lost all of his music in an electrical outage.

One year later, Barclay re-located to San Francisco and decided to merge his passion for music and film by releasing Intellect, a six hour DVD package, self-directed and produced, covering the worldwide electronic music scene and including interviews with over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Dubfire, and Theo Parrish. The main goal of the Intellect project was to make an informative DVD that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw taking lessons from his own DVD by starting a record label called dirtybird and a production career under the name Claude VonStroke.
Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American tech funk label and has released over 20 EPs. Claude VonStrokes very first record, Deep Throat, was a major hit of 2005. The success of the single was followed up by Whos Afraid of Detroit?, another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the best track of 2006 in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full-length debut album, Beware of the Bird to outstanding reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the underground. Since then, he has recorded over 25 remixes for a range of commercial and underground artists from Indy rock group The Rapture to Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson.
In an effort to give something back to the community Claude unveiled a deeper techno label called mothership in 2007. A large percentage of the labels proceeds go to a music school for children in Claudes hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This label features a more euro flavor featuring groups like Catz n Dogz, Italoboyz Maetrik and Voodeux.
Claude has also headlined almost every major club, festival and basement after-party in the world from Fabric to Panorama Bar to DEdge. The outdoor dirtybird parties in San Franciscos scenic Golden Gate Park have also become a legendary summer destination point for both locals and international travelers. A VonStroke DJ set is based on meticulous track selection and outrageous risk taking. He always takes time to find the special ass-wiggling cuts that keep the dance-floor percolating.
In 2009, Claude is very excited to be mixing Fabric 46. He will also return to the studio and release his 2nd artist album.
