Trip-Hop Music: The Herbaliser – Something Wicked

March 82010

The Cosmic Lounge presents Trip-Hop Music: ‘Something Wicked’ by The Herbaliser.

“The Herbaliser is a hip-hop band formed by Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry in London, UK in 1994. Currently one of the most famous artists from the Ninja Tune independent record label, they have released 7 LPs, including a DJ mix for Ninja Tunes Solid Steel series. Their latest release is Same As It Never Was using more live instrumentation and featuring soulful vocals on four tracks. Tracks by The Herbaliser have featured a variety of guest vocalists including Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Seaming To, Rakaa-Iriscience, Blade, Phi Life Cypher, Bahamadia, Katerine, Dream Warriors and Daniel Dumile (as MF DOOM).

The core pairing assembled a full 8-piece live band for touring purposes, and released one Herbaliser Band album. Although still a studio rather than a live album, it is distinct from the normal Herbaliser albums; the lack of guest vocalists focuses the an overall live band feel, especially showcasing the horn section.”

Buzzcocks – 02. Time’s Up (First take guitar dub)

March 52010

Spiral Scratch was a four-track EP by the punk band Buzzcocks, recorded in 1976 and released in January 1977. It was the first punk record to be self-released (that is, without the support of a record label), and only the third ever by a British punk band. When reissued in 1979, it reached number 31 in the UK Singles Chart.

Buzzcocks recorded the tracks on 28 December 1976 at Indigo Sound, Manchester on 16-track tape. According to Devoto, “It took three hours [to record the tracks], with another two for mixing.”[1] Produced by Martin Hannett (credited as Martin Zero), the music was roughly recorded, insistently repetitive, and energetic.

The band, having no record label support, had to borrow £500 from their friends and families to pay for the record’s production and manufacture.[2] The EP was released 29 January 1977 on the band’s own New Hormones label, making Buzzcocks the first English Punk group to establish an independent record label. Despite this, the disc quickly sold out its initial run of 1,000 copies, and went on to sell 16,000 copies, initially by mail order, but also with the help of the Manchester branch of music chain store Virgin, whose manager took some copies and persuaded other regional branch managers to follow suit.

They gained international prominence through their contributions to the groundbreaking 1975 world music album Le Mystere des voix Bulgares, originally released on the Swiss label Disques Cellier and later reissued on Britain’s 4AD Records and the German Jaro label.

The trio comprises Stoyanka Boneva from Pirin, Yanka Rupkina from Strandja and Eva Georgieva from Dobroudja. Their diversity of regional backgrounds enabled them to create a unique sound to their music. They signed to record labels Bulgaria Balkanton and Hannibal in 1987. Two years later they featured on The Sensual World album by Kate Bush on the songs “Deeper Understanding”, “Never Be Mine”, and “Rocket’s Tail”. In 1993 they appeared on another Kate Bush album, The Red Shoes, in the songs “You’re the One”, “The Song of Solomon”, and “Why Should I Love You?”, which also featured Prince. The trio have since concentrated on solo projects but often re-form for concert appearances

The three female vocalists in the Trio Bulgarka /Yanka Rupkina, Stoyanka Boneva, and Eva Georgieva/ have also performed and recorded with the Sofia Radio Choir, who can be heard on the famous series of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares albums. The trio’s performances, understandably, place considerably greater weight on the harmonic and solo vocal skills of each member. Several respected Bulgarian musicians accompany them on some of the tracks on their album, The Forest is Crying, which was co-produced by Joe Boyd (more famous for producing rock acts such as Fairport Convention and R.E.M.). The Trio Bulgarka are also part of the group Balkana, have made well-received tours of the U.S. with the Radio Choir, and recorded a few tracks with rock singer Kate Bush.

Who sleep shall awake…
Greeting the shadows from the sun.

Who sleep shall awake…
Watching the thunder of our lives,

Waiting for the moment to arrive,
Show us the silent in the rise.

So that we may,
Someday understand…

Lord Summerisle: “Now, those children out there, they’re jumping through the flames in the hope that the god of the fire will make them fruitful. Really, you can’t blame them. After all, what girl would not prefer the child of a god to that of some acne-scarred artisan?”

Sergeant Howie: “And you encourage them in this?”

Lord Summerisle: “Actively! It’s most important to teach new generation born of Summerisle be made aware that here the old gods aren’t dead.”

Sergeant Howie: “And what of the true God? To whose glory churches and monasteries have been built on these islands for generations past? Now shall what of Him?”

Lord Summerisle: “Oh, He’s dead. He can’t complain. He had his chance and in modern parlance. Blew it.”

Chicane – In Praise of The Sun

February 122010

Chicane is an electronic dance music act, and the project of English musician and record producer Nick Bracegirdle. He was born on 28 February 1971, in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire.[1]

Chicane is known for the singles “Offshore”, an Ibiza dance anthem included in thousands of compilations in both chill-out and dance versions; “Saltwater”, which featured vocals by Clannad member Máire Brennan and is ranked among the best-ever trance singles[attribution needed]; and the UK number-one hit “Don’t Give Up”, featuring vocals by Bryan Adams, and also a top ten hit on singles charts across Europe.

Far from the Maddening Crowds, Chicane’s debut album, is still considered a seminal release among the trance music community,[2] while the second album, Behind the Sun, was certified gold in the UK. In 2007, after the hindrance of an ultimately unreleased album in the intervening time, Somersault was released on Bracegirdle’s independent record label.

In addition, Bracegirdle also worked under the aliases Disco Citizens, producing a handful of less radio-friendly, vocal-less tracks with a stronger progressive house sound. Working with singer Vanessa St. James and producer Mr. Joshua, Bracegirdle was part of the Mr. Joshua Presents Espiritu project, known for the song “In Praise of the Sun”, released with both English and French vocals. Nick has also gone by the name “Rebel Transcanner” to produce a remix of Tomski’s “14 Hours To Save The Earth.” Nick Bracegirdle has also used the alias Sitvac to produce a one-time single, “Wishful Thinking.”
